Hi everyone my name is Rosemary, and I'm an English major. I'm currently student-teaching at a middle school and want to become a full-time English teacher once I graduate. Some little info about me is that my birthday is June 24, I like going to concerts, my favorite food is sushi, I love coffee, and I really love K-pop.
As a future educator, I think technology has both negative and positive aspects in the classroom. On one hand, when used well, it can enhance learning. For example, multimedia tools like videos, podcasts, or apps can make lessons more engaging and help students connect with material in new ways. It’s great for visual and auditory learners, and it opens up a lot of opportunities for collaboration. Tools like Google Docs or online discussion boards make it easier for students to work together, share ideas, and get instant feedback. On the other hand, if not used carefully, technology can be a distraction. I’ve seen instances where teachers overuse technology just to keep up with trends, without thinking about how it truly serves the learning goals. Long, unengaging videos or apps with too many features can pull students' attention away from the lesson itself. Without clear guidance, it’s easy for students to get lost in the technology itself rather than the content.
Overall, I think technology is one of those topics that many may be 50/50 on as it can be quite nuanced, but in general, I personally like to use technology both as a student and educator.
Hi Rose! I also love sushi and coffee. Not together though. I definitely agree with your assertion that technology can be both a benefit and a detriment to a classroom. Without guidance that really encourages students to know the right thing to do and the wrong thing to do, they can get easily distracted and veer off-task in the blink of an eye. I've found that students will be distracted no matter what they have to work with; they'll read the same posters that are in the room over and over, they'll stare off into space and daydream about what they're having for lunch, they'll distract or be distracted by their classmates, or they'll sneak a glance at their phones. No matter what, the kids will find a way to be distracted. I think that the really important thing is making sure kids are safe when they're using online tools. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHi Rosemary! Your blog set up is so cute! I agree with you when you mention technology being a good and a bad thing. There has been so much innovation in the tech front but that isn’t all the best for students. The good thing that comes with technology is that there are a lot of resources out there that can help students. Some students are better with visuals and you mention videos and podcasts that teachers can use. Very recently with my class, I put on a quick 3 minute video about F. Scott Fitzgerald. Students were able to see more about his life and interact with visuals that they don't normally get. In my class right now we're doing The Great Gatsby, and to go along with that we're talking about the 20s and the jazz age. Which means that they are not entirely aware of what consisted of that era. Including what it looked like and how different it is from today. Using technology and especially with visuals, helped students learn more about the time period. Therefore, it can be helpful but with limitations like you’ve mentioned.
